October was uncharacteristically cooler, though walking is easier when it is not too hot. The groups of walkers were joined by a group of BMW motorbike owners on a tour of the Pyrennees. We took a short break to go boating on the canals. At Banyuls the annual Fete de Vendange to celebrate the wine harvest takes place in early October, and in Port Vendres there was a festival of traditional boats, with, as always, a firework display.
By contrast, November was mostly warm and sunny, with bookings continuing until the middle of the month. One feature of this time of year is that the spectacular sunrise in front of the house takes place at half past seven. Everyone gets up to watch.
Bird migration continued with passing storks and cranes, eagles, harriers, buzzards and kites. We have had good views of some rarities over the season – lesser kestrels, pallid harriers and nesting red-rumped swallows near the house. There were repeated sightings of peregrine falcon too, quite frequent calls of Eagle Owls (and some sightings too) and a woodcock standing at the bottom of the track in December.
