For the second year running the good weather holds until the middle of November, and groups of walkers continue until the 15th. The picture here shows me walking in shorts and T shirt on the 7th November. Following this the temperature dropped sharply, and we had the first of two periods of intense rain. In Collioure cars were washed out to sea, and there was flooding in Argeles-sur Mer. The house is better able to withstand the rain than a few years ago, but even so there is some clearing up to do, before the festive season, a Christmas market, son et lumière at Collioure and the UK for Christmas.
In January the rain was even worse, washing away tonnes of material from our track, and making access impossible except by 4x4. If repairs are not done before Easter the next season will be a problem, but the workmen from the Mairie are overloaded with fallen trees, blocked paths, road surfaces washed away by the intensity of the rain, and huge piles of debris on every beach.
The late migrants leave, a few cranes and booted eagles – an odd hirundine that has been delayed, and our winter migrants arrive . The ground clearance continues to reduce the fire risk, and David tries to repair some of the damage to the access road. Fourteen white storks flying over the house in early February remind us that the new season is not far off.
We are building our reputation and bookings for 2015 start briskly in the new year, so that by the end of February we already have most Summer weeks booked, and several weekends in May too.
